LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Save The Oro Moraine acknowledges that we are situated on the traditional land of the Anishnaabek (A-nish-in-aa-beh) people, and ancestral territory of the Wendat (also known as the Huron-Wendat). The Anishnaabek include the Odawa (Oh-DAH-wah), Ojibwe (O-jib-we) and Pottawatomi (boh-tah-WAH-toh-mee) nations, collectively known as the Three Fires Confederacy. It continues today as the home for diverse indigenous Peoples.
The Anishnaabek people continue to have an enduring relationship with this land, spefically the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, the Chippewa Tri-Council and the Williams Treaties First Nations. The Huron-Wendat Nation also continues to pay respect and protect their ancestors and heritage on this land. We honour the Indigenous history that has thrived for millennia in this territory.
We wish to acknowledge the Land as a living being, along with the countless diverse and beautiful life forms which we share this Land with. Recognizing the Land we are on expresses gratitude and appreciation to that which sustains and provides for us. Learning about the true history of this land and whose territory we live on, honours the Indigenous Peoples who have long been living with and taking care of the land.
We must begin with acknowledging the Truth so that we can move forward towards Reconciliation. We acknowledge the role that colonization plays in unsustainable growth and development, and support Land Back efforts for Indigenous Peoples to continue to steward and protect the land.
